Central African Republic Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, “Most Serious Basis” to End Conflict
United Nations (New York) - The Central African Republic (CAR) reaffirmed, Tuesday in New York, its support for Morocco's Autonomy initiative, “the most serious, credible, and realistic basis” for a definitive settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking before the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Central African Permanent Representative, Ambassador Marius Nzessioué, stressed that this initiative, which is based on the principles of compromise, pragmatism, and respect for territorial integrity, offers broad autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty and constitutes a model of decentralized governance and democratic participation of local populations.
It responds to the legitimate aspirations of the inhabitants of the Moroccan Sahara to manage their affairs while preserving national stability and unity, he noted, highlighting the growing international support for this initiative.
The diplomat further indicated that his country notes with satisfaction the opening of several Consulates General in the cities of Dakhla and Laayoune, adding that this momentum attests to confidence in the development and prosperity of this region of Morocco.
He also welcomed the investments made by the Kingdom in its Southern Provinces, particularly in infrastructure, education, and renewable energy, which reflect a “desire for progress and dignity for all.”
On the other hand, the ambassador expressed his country’s concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, particularly the impact on women and children, calling for a collective effort to alleviate suffering and ensure access to humanitarian aid.
He indicated that the Central African Republic reaffirms its support for the political process conducted under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations and calls on all stakeholders to demonstrate realism and responsibility.
