39th AU Summit: Morocco Reaffirms Its Commitment to Strengthening Joint African Action in Line with the Enlightened Royal Vision

The 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, held on February 14 and 15 in Addis Ababa, provided Morocco with an opportunity to reaffirm its strong commitment to actively contributing to the strengthening of joint African action, in accordance with the enlightened Royal Vision.

The Summit, which was preceded by the 48th session of the AU Executive Council on February 11 and 12, was marked by broad recognition of the relevance of Morocco’s vision, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, particularly regarding the nexus between peace, security, and development in Africa. This recognition was reflected in Morocco’s election, in the first round and for the third time, to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.

This election is widely viewed as a testament to the Kingdom’s sustained contribution to peacebuilding, security consolidation, and development efforts since its return to the African Union. During its first mandate on the Peace and Security Council from 2018 to 2020, Morocco worked to place the peace, security, and development nexus at the heart of the Council’s agenda.

Morocco’s vision also extends to the international level, where it advocates within multilateral platforms, particularly at the United Nations, for the integration of African priorities and realities into all initiatives aimed at advancing peace, security, and development across the continent through a partnership based approach.

Morocco’s election to the Peace and Security Council also reflects recognition of the initiatives led by His Majesty the King in support of a stable Africa. The Kingdom’s approach to conflict resolution is grounded in rational dialogue, respect for international law, and the pursuit of peaceful solutions.

Drawing on the experience gained during its previous mandates, Morocco is positioned to further strengthen its contribution to Africa’s security and stability.

The Kingdom also played an active role in advancing the African Union’s 2026 theme: ensuring sustainable access to water and safe sanitation systems to achieve the objectives of Agenda 2063. Morocco supported the adoption of a roadmap addressing key challenges related to this theme, including agriculture and climate resilience.

In this context, a side event was organized during the 48th session of the Executive Council at the initiative of Morocco’s Permanent Mission to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Held under the theme “Water and Sanitation in Africa: South South Cooperation for Innovative Solutions Serving Climate Resilience and Inclusive Human Development,” the meeting brought together several African ministers, permanent representatives, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and other partners.

The discussions highlighted the Royal approach that positions water and sanitation as structural levers for climate resilience and inclusive human development, while promoting solidarity based South South cooperation.

Morocco has also proposed hosting a high level conference in 2026 on South South cooperation in the field of water and sanitation, in preparation for the United Nations Water Conference scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in December.

The Summit further underscored the sustained efforts of His Majesty the King, in his capacity as the African Union Leader on Migration, to transform migration into a genuine economic lever for the continent. This approach combines the strengthening of stability, the implementation of inclusive development strategies, and crisis prevention within a comprehensive and human centered framework.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Morocco actively participated in discussions on health sovereignty in Africa. The Kingdom reiterated its full support for the operationalization of the African Medicines Agency and reaffirmed its determination to assist the agency during this decisive phase so that it may become a central pillar of pharmaceutical regulation and health security across the continent.

Morocco also stressed the need to align political choices, funding decisions, and partnerships toward building strong, autonomous, and resilient African health systems.

In a statement at the conclusion of the Summit, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, emphasized that the 39th AU Summit provided the Kingdom with an opportunity to reaffirm its firm commitment to strengthening joint African action in line with the enlightened Royal Vision. He underlined the importance of consolidating this collective effort to serve the continent’s noble causes and the vital interests of African citizens in the areas of peace, security, and development.
