UN Secretary-General Denounces Human Rights Violations in Tindouf Camps

The latest report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the Moroccan Sahara has once again raised alarm over the dire human rights situation in the Tindouf camps, located on Algerian territory.

The report highlights systematic abuses committed by the armed separatist group known as the “Polisario,” with the complicity of the host country, against the civilian populations held in these camps.

It also underscores information received by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) denouncing the persistent precarious living conditions in Tindouf, including food insecurity, and calls for the protection of human rights within the camps.

The report further notes that ongoing restrictions on freedom of expression and movement, lack of access to justice, and acts of intimidation and harassment targeting the detained populations of Tindouf, particularly women and children, have not only worsened the human rights situation but also deepened food insecurity and further exacerbated poverty in the camps.

Mr. Guterres also highlighted a letter submitted by Morocco to the OHCHR on June 26, 2025, detailing the systematic violations committed by the “Polisario” in the Tindouf camps and their exploitation by Algerian propaganda.

The report recalls testimonies and findings confirming the recruitment of child soldiers and the repeated diversion of international humanitarian aid, depriving the most vulnerable populations of essential support. To this day, these populations remain without a credible and transparent census, despite repeated calls by various UN bodies to the host country. This lack of accountability enables opacity and manipulation of figures to divert humanitarian assistance.

Once again, the international community is being urged to address these grave abuses that violate the fundamental rights of the populations detained in Tindouf. Calls are mounting for stricter monitoring, unhindered access for UN human rights mechanisms, and the urgent implementation of measures to ensure the dignity and freedom of these populations.
