Morocco Holds ‘Significant’ Potential to Promote Sustainable Agriculture – FAO Representative

“The initiatives launched by Morocco, such as the Green Morocco Plan and the Generation Green 2020-2030 strategy, illustrate the significant potential for strengthening food security, supporting smallholders, and promoting sustainable agriculture,“ Huynh stated during the ceremony celebrating World Food Day, themed this year ”Hand in hand for better foods and a better future.” .

Chaired by Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Marine Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests Ahmed El Bouari, the ceremony was an opportunity for the FAO representative in Morocco to highlight the Kingdom’s remarkable leadership in this area, with its commitment to more sustainable and climate-resilient agri-food systems.

Huynh also pointed out that young people play a key role in this transformation, particularly through their contribution to innovation, the integration of advanced technologies, and the promotion of human values.

He also reiterated the four priority areas defined by the FAO, namely improving production, nutrition, the environment, and living conditions.

This year’s World Food Day, which coincided with the FAO’s 80th anniversary, was a call for collective action to eliminate hunger and malnutrition and strengthen food security. It highlighted the need to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems by joining traditional knowledge to innovation.

The opening session of the celebration ceremony was followed by a scientific panel discussion on the theme of this year’s edition, attended by national and international technical and financial partners, professionals, public institutions, research and training establishments, as well as central, regional, and subordinate structures of the ministry.

The discussions focused on public policies in favor of food security, in line with the “Green Generation” 2020-2030 strategy.

Talks also highlighted issues related to the sustainable and efficient management of natural resources, the development of production systems that are resilient to climate hazards, innovation and the promotion of local knowledge, as well as social inclusion and equitable access to healthy, sufficient, and nutritious food.

Recommendations from this panel will enrich the national momentum driven by the “Green Generation” strategy, with a view to accelerating the transition to a sustainable, resilient and value-creating agricultural and rural model.

Through this day’s celebrations, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment, in partnership with the FAO and all stakeholders, to guaranteeing every citizen equitable and sustainable access to food.
