2025, the year of the international consecration of the Moroccan nature of the Sahara

The year 2025 will remain engraved as the moment of a global diplomatic shift in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara. Rarely has an international issue seen, in such a short time, such a convergence of positions, such a clarification of UN discourse, and such isolation of the separatist thesis carried by the Polisario and its Algerian sponsor.

The result of a constant strategic vision and long-term diplomatic work carried out under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this year confirmed the soundness of the Moroccan approach: patience, credibility, respect for international legality, and the primacy of a realistic political solution.

The UN records an irreversible turning point

At the heart of this dynamic, the resolution adopted in 2025 by the United Nations Security Council marks a historic break. For the first time, UN language moves away from the ambiguities of the past and explicitly consecrates the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, presented in 2007, as the only serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a definitive settlement of the regional dispute over the Sahara.

The text of the resolution does not merely support the Moroccan option. It clearly frames its political parameters. It identifies without ambiguity the four concerned parties, Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario, putting an end to the fiction maintained by Algiers of a bilateral conflict artificially reduced to an opposition between Rabat and a separatist militia.

Another major step forward is the renewed insistence on the resumption of political round tables, under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations and the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General, Staffan de Mistura. This format confirms the centrality of the autonomy plan and calls on the parties to engage responsibly, without preconditions or dilatory maneuvers.

Major powers align, Algeria becomes isolated

This UN sequence was accompanied by a clear alignment of the major world powers. The United States, France and the United Kingdom, permanent members of the Security Council, reaffirmed without ambiguity their support for the Moroccan vision. Faced with this dynamic, Algeria chose abstention and retreat, revealing the growing weakening of its narrative and its inability to rally support.

Even the abstentions of China and Russia, long perceived as actors with more nuanced positions, reflect a notable evolution. The absence of explicit opposition to a resolution favorable to Morocco confirms that the separatist thesis no longer constitutes a credible alternative on the international stage.

A domino effect across all continents

Beyond the Security Council, the whole of 2025 was marked by major diplomatic advances. States long confined to cautious neutrality clarified their positions in favor of autonomy, while others carried out spectacular reversals.

The case of Kenya is emblematic. A former supporter of the Polisario, Nairobi officially withdrew its recognition of the separatist entity before announcing, in May 2025, its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan and the opening of its embassy in Rabat. A strong strategic choice, given Kenya’s political and diplomatic weight in East Africa.

In the same dynamic, Ghana suspended its relations with the so-called “SADR” in June and clearly aligned itself with the Moroccan proposal, further shrinking the already narrow circle of African supporters of separatism. These developments now open the way to a legitimate debate on the place, or rather the lack of legitimacy, of this entity within the African Union.

Decisive breakthroughs in Latin America and Europe

Long considered a stronghold of separatist discourse, Latin America also shifted. Ecuador, followed by Panama, recognized in 2025 that the Moroccan autonomy plan constitutes the only realistic political outcome to the conflict, confirming the gradual collapse of Polisario influence in that part of the world.

In Europe, support multiplied and solidified. Portugal, Poland and Belgium successively affirmed their backing of the autonomy plan, with significant political and legal implications. Brussels went so far as to recognize the “existential” nature of the Sahara issue for Morocco, committing to align its diplomatic and economic actions with this position, including within the framework of trade partnerships.

A structuring diplomatic victory

The year 2025 thus stands as a major strategic milestone in consolidating Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara. The evolution of international discourse, the constant expansion of the circle of supporters and the growing isolation of the separatist thesis confirm a reality that is now difficult to contest: Morocco is the central, legitimate and credible actor on this issue.

Beyond a diplomatic success, 2025 opens the way to a durable, pragmatic and consensual political solution, in line with international law and the aspirations of local populations. A victory of consistency, vision and responsible diplomacy, which definitively places the Moroccan Sahara at the heart of a future of stability, development and fully assumed sovereignty.
