Security Council Resolution on Moroccan Sahara, ‘Big Step Forward’ – New US Ambassador to Morocco

United Nations (New York) - The adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2797, which considers the autonomy plan as the basis for resolving the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, marks “a big step forward,” said the new US Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan.

“This is a great day and a big step forward,” the US ambassador told MAP following the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797 on Friday.

Duke Buchan attended the Security Council vote on Resolution 2797 in New York, alongside the US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz.

Following the vote, Waltz conveyed the satisfaction of the United States, the resolution’s pen-holder, with this “historic” adoption, reaffirming that the Moroccan autonomy Initiative is “the only basis” for reaching a just and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
