Nasser Bourita Calls for a Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Based on Equality and Complementarity
Morocco reaffirmed on Thursday, September 11 in Rabat, its commitment to a strong and balanced Euro-Mediterranean partnership. Speaking at a high-level retreat dedicated to the future of relations between both shores, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita called for “relations founded on mutual respect and free from any logic of dependency.”

Alongside Dubravka Šuica, European Commissioner in charge of the Mediterranean on an official visit to Morocco, the Moroccan Foreign Minister recalled that this space “is not merely a neighborhood but a genuine framework of belonging for the Kingdom, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”
This meeting, which brought together government officials, experts, economic actors and academics, comes on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration. For Bourita, it represents “a key moment” to assess the progress made and prepare for a new stage of cooperation.
The Minister stressed the importance of a frank and inclusive dialogue, open to all perspectives, in order to build a common future in the face of regional and global challenges. He also underlined the close link between stability in the Middle East and the construction of the Euro-Mediterranean space, strongly denouncing “violations of international law and the forced displacement inflicted on Palestinian civilians in Gaza.”
Reaffirming Morocco’s philosophy, Bourita called for a partnership “on equal footing,” based on integration and complementarity: “No one should impose their path on the other. We need each other to face together the challenges of our time.”
Finally, the Minister praised the commitment of the European Commissioner, considering that this meeting could mark “a new starting point” for Euro-Mediterranean relations, which are called upon to become a genuine bridge between North and South, serving the peoples and their shared prosperity.
