Robert Satloff, Executive Director of the American think tank The Washington Institute: The UN Security Council resolution on the Moroccan Sahara crowns the tireless efforts of His Majesty the King’s active diplomacy
The adoption by the United Nations Security Council of its historic resolution on the Moroccan Sahara marks the culmination of tireless diplomatic efforts led under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, said Robert Satloff, Executive Director of the American think tank The Washington Institute.
“This is an impressive achievement. It is truly the result of long-term work driven by His Majesty the King and supported by all political, governmental, and economic actors,” Mr. Satloff stated in an interview with MAP.
Security Council Resolution 2797, which establishes Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the basis for any solution, provides “clear support for the approach adopted by Morocco” to definitively resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, the American expert explained.
“This is a major breakthrough for Morocco, reflecting years of diplomatic efforts on the ground to gain support country by country, capital by capital,” he said, noting that this major turning point in the Moroccan Sahara issue also reflects the “deep partnership with the United States,” the penholder of the Security Council resolution and an influential permanent member.
Mr. Satloff also highlighted the Kingdom’s considerable efforts in investing in structural projects, infrastructure, and socio-economic development in the Southern Provinces, emphasizing that these initiatives have greatly contributed to Morocco’s strategy to bring this artificial conflict to a definitive end.
“I visited the city of Dakhla, where one can clearly see the enormous investments made, and it is evident that this has an impact and shows other countries that this is not just a political claim, but that the region is meant to be an integral part of Morocco’s overall economy and society,” he concluded.
