Moroccan Sahara: The Historic Significance of UN Resolution 2797 Highlighted in Bologna
The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which confirms Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces, along with the geopolitical importance of the historic Green March, was highlighted on Saturday in Bologna, Italy, during an event marking the 50th anniversary of this national milestone.
Held under the theme “A People United by Peace: 50 Years of History and Progress”, the gathering was organized by the associations “Jeunes Maroco-Italiens” and “Jasmine”. The event brought together Moroccan and Italian personalities from various fields, including a large number of Moroccans residing in different regions of Italy.
On this occasion, political scientist and senior expert at the Center for Studies on Africa and the Middle East, El Moussaoui El Ajlaoui, provided a historical overview of the national cause of Morocco’s territorial integrity before emphasizing the recent Security Council resolution recognizing the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
He explained that this historic resolution marks the beginning of a new era, as it recognizes for the first time Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces and affirms that the political solution lies in the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative.
Speaking about the Green March, Mr. El Ajlaoui noted that the decision to launch this peaceful mass mobilization was a major turning point in the history of Morocco and the region, fundamentally reshaping geopolitical balances.
For her part, Moroccan-Italian journalist and author Karima Moual highlighted the significance of the UN resolution adopted at the symbolic moment of the 50th anniversary of the Green March, noting that it undoubtedly opens a new phase for the Moroccan Sahara and the region as a whole.
According to Ms. Moual, this resolution strengthens Morocco’s position as a key regional player and a source of stability, particularly in the Sahel and the southern Mediterranean.
She emphasized Morocco’s leadership in the region, the result of active diplomacy and a strong development policy led under the guidance of HM King Mohammed VI. She added that the southern provinces are witnessing profound economic and social transformation driven by major infrastructure projects and large-scale investments across various sectors.
Sharing the same perspective, Moroccan-Italian journalist and writer Zouhir Louassini welcomed the adoption of the UN resolution, recalling that the Kingdom has consistently worked to resolve disputes through peaceful means, with the Green March standing as the most striking illustration.
He pointed out that the recovery of the southern provinces by Morocco came as the culmination of a peaceful process, demonstrating to the world the strategic vision of the late HM King Hassan II and the remarkable mobilization of the Moroccan people behind their late Sovereign.
The event, attended by the Consul General of Morocco in Bologna, Khadija Nadour, featured the screening of an institutional film retracing the Green March epic and showcasing the progress achieved by Morocco in developing its southern provinces.
