U17 World Cup: Portugal Crowned World Champion After 1–0 Win Against Austria

Portugal lifted the U17 World Cup after defeating Austria 1–0 in the final played Thursday night at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

Anisio Cabral scored the only goal of the match in the 32nd minute, courtesy of a decisive pass from Duarte Cunha, confirming Portugal’s dominance both offensively and defensively throughout the game.

The Seleção das Quinas reached the final after beating Brazil on penalties (6–5) following a goalless draw in regular time. This was the first time in its history that Portugal played in the final of this competition. With three previous participations — the last dating back to 2003 — Portugal turned the tide in Qatar and entered the history books with this first title.

Austria, led by Johannes Moser — the competition’s top scorer with eight goals — had not competed in this tournament since the 2013 edition, when they were eliminated in the group stage.

Before this final defeat, Austria had a perfect record, winning all their matches in this Qatari World Cup. They qualified for the final by beating Italy 2–0, with Johannes Moser scoring both goals.

In the third-place match, Italy beat Brazil 4–2 on penalties after a 0–0 draw played at Field No. 7 of the Aspire Zone.
