UN Resolution Strengthens Global Momentum for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Says Former Mexican Ambassador

Mexico city - UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara confirms the strong and growing international momentum in favor of the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco to definitively settle this regional dispute, stated former Mexican ambassador to Morocco, Andrés Ordoñez.

In an article published in the daily El Universal, Ordoñez emphasized that this Initiative, endorsed by the UN resolution as the most realistic basis for resolving this artificial conflict, enjoys clear and unequivocal support from major world powers such as the United States, Spain, and France.

In this respect, Ordoñez called on his country to join this positive momentum in favor of the Moroccan identity of the Sahara.

The former ambassador, who also serves as vice-president of the Mexican Observatory of the Moroccan Sahara, further noted that the recent UN resolution called on all parties to engage in negotiations without preconditions, based on the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.

Ordoñez also highlighted the development dynamic that Morocco is experiencing, noting that these sustained efforts have enabled the Kingdom to modernize its institutions and establish itself as a leading economic hub in Africa and beyond.

Thanks to its political stability, state-of-the-art infrastructure, technological and energy leadership, and diversified partnerships, Morocco represents a gateway for Mexico to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, the former ambassador concluded.
