Serge Berdugo: His Majesty the King, Commander of the Faithful, is the guarantor of freedom of worship for the three monotheistic religions in the Kingdom
The Commandery of the Faithful, entrusted to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, stands as a cornerstone of the “Moroccan exception,” underlined Serge Berdugo, Ambassador-at-Large of His Majesty, on Thursday in New York. He affirmed that, through this mission, the Sovereign guarantees the freedom of worship for followers of the three monotheistic religions within the Kingdom.

Enshrined in the Constitution of 2011, this Moroccan exception is “set in stone,” Berdugo explained, noting that the text recognizes the Hebrew tributary as a component of Morocco’s plural national identity. He made these remarks during a tribute ceremony held in his honor by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), in his capacity as President of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco.
This uniqueness is notably reflected in the preservation of Jewish cultural and religious heritage as an integral part of the Kingdom’s patrimony.
Berdugo also took the opportunity to highlight the historic ties between Morocco and the United States, consecrated by the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1787, “the oldest unbroken treaty in American history.”
In this regard, he recalled the recognition, in December 2020, by the United States of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, a position reiterated on several occasions since then.
During the ceremony, Serge Berdugo was awarded the Akiba Prize by the American Jewish Committee.
This distinction was presented to him “in recognition of his tireless efforts in service of his community and his country, the Kingdom of Morocco, whose Sovereign, in keeping with a long-standing tradition, honors and protects His Jewish subjects and ensures the safeguarding of pluralism and mutual respect as unwavering national values,” emphasized AJC President Ted Deutch.
