Congressman Joe Wilson Calls on the Algerian Regime to Break with the Polisario
Tensions are rising on the international stage toward Algiers. A day after the Madrid meeting devoted to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson delivered a particularly firm message to the Algerian authorities, urging them to sever ties with the Polisario terrorists, whom he bluntly describes as an organization with extremist and destabilizing ideological leanings.

In a public statement, the Republican lawmaker invited Algerian leaders to seize the current diplomatic momentum to reorient their regional strategy and prioritize closer ties with Washington. According to him, a strong relationship with the United States would offer Algeria far more advantageous prospects on the economic, military and strategic levels than the continuation of controversial alliances that are diplomatically costly.
Joe Wilson stressed that Algeria’s continued support for the Polisario constitutes, in his view, a major factor of instability in the Maghreb. He called on Algerian decision-makers to abandon what he described as an outdated ideological project, arguing that such a break would pave the way for a lasting political solution based on the autonomy initiative supported by several international partners.
The American congressman also pointed to the need for Algeria to reassess some of its external alliances, suggesting that a strategic repositioning could transform the country’s future and directly benefit its population. This stance is consistent with his previous positions. In June 2025, Joe Wilson had already introduced a bill in Congress seeking to classify the Polisario as a terrorist organization, a text that received bipartisan support.
An influential figure on Capitol Hill and known for his proximity to American strategic circles supportive of Morocco, Wilson recently held talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, confirming his active involvement in issues related to geopolitical balance in North Africa.
Through this clear-cut position, the message sent to Algiers is unambiguous. In an international context marked by the reshaping of alliances and rising security challenges, the persistence of policies seen as rigid and ideologically driven could further isolate the regime, while a pragmatic shift could open the door to more constructive integration into regional and international dynamics.
