France, Germany and the United Kingdom to carry out “defensive actions” to “destroy” Iran’s military capabilities (Joint statement)
The three European countries say they will work with the United States and regional allies following Iranian missile attacks.
France, Germany and the United Kingdom announced on Sunday evening that they will carry out “defensive actions” to “destroy” Iran’s military capabilities.
In a joint statement made public by the Élysée, the leaders of the three countries affirmed that they “have agreed to work together with the United States and allies in the region on this issue.”
“We will take measures to defend our interests and those of our allies in the region, potentially by enabling necessary and proportionate defensive actions to destroy Iran’s capacity to launch missiles and drones at their source,” the statement reads.
Paris, London and Berlin expressed “their dismay at the indiscriminate and disproportionate missile attacks launched by Iran against countries in the region, including those that were not involved in the initial military operations of the United States and Israel.”
“Iran’s reckless attacks have targeted our close allies and threaten our military personnel and civilians throughout the region,” the joint statement laments.
Earlier in the evening, French President Emmanuel Macron chaired a Defense and National Security Council meeting during which he stated that the interests of France and those of its allies in the region “lead us to strengthen our posture and our defensive support in order to stand alongside those with whom we have defense treaties and to adapt our posture to developments in recent hours.”
