Military Drones: Morocco and the United States Launch a New Strategic Hub in Africa
Morocco and the United States are taking a new step in their military cooperation by launching an innovative project: the creation of a regional training center dedicated to drones for the benefit of African armed forces. This initiative, the first of its kind on the continent, is part of a broader effort to modernize defense capabilities in response to evolving security threats.
Announced by senior U.S. military officials, this future center of excellence aims to train African operators in the use of drones, while promoting the sharing of expertise and coordination between armed forces. Beyond the technical aspect, the objective is to equip partner countries with modern tools and a strategic approach adapted to current challenges, particularly in the areas of surveillance, intelligence, and the fight against asymmetric threats.
The first concrete implementation of this project will take place during the African Lion 2026 exercise, a major military event co-organized by Rabat and Washington. This edition will, for the first time, introduce a pilot module dedicated to the integration of drones into military operations, marking a turning point in joint exercises in Africa.
Building on American expertise and Morocco’s geostrategic position, this center aims to become a continental reference in training and military innovation. It also reflects the shared commitment of both partners to building a more effective African security architecture, where technology will play a central role.
