Air Power of the Royal Armed Forces: Morocco takes a strategic step forward with the acquisition of 10 Airbus H225M helicopters

Morocco is steadily continuing the modernization of its Royal Armed Forces with the announcement of the acquisition of ten H225M helicopters, one of the flagship models of Airbus Helicopters. This decision marks the end of four decades of service for the iconic Puma and ushers in a new era of enhanced operational capabilities, both for rescue missions in hostile environments and complex military operations.

In a demanding regional context where responsiveness and versatility of air power are essential, the Kingdom once again confirms its commitment to providing its units with next generation equipment. The H225M, a global benchmark in its category, positions itself as a major strategic asset.

“We are honored that Morocco has chosen to replace its historic Puma fleet with the H225M,” declared Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, praising “a new step in a partnership built over several decades with the Kingdom.” According to him, the H225M “is establishing itself as an essential aircraft for missions in challenging environments,” reinforcing its international reputation.

This order is part of the continuation of long standing industrial and technical cooperation. Since the establishment of Airbus Atlantic in Morocco in 1951, the partnership has continued to expand, particularly through the production of composite materials, the assembly of sophisticated metallic substructures and advanced maintenance of avionics systems.

In 2024, Airbus Helicopters inaugurated a customer support center exclusively dedicated to Morocco, responsible for the technical support of more than 60 Airbus helicopters operated by the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy and the Royal Gendarmerie. The center aims to eventually become a complete MRO platform (maintenance, repair and overhaul), positioned as a regional hub for West Africa.

The H225M helicopters intended for the Royal Armed Forces will be equipped with advanced systems including dual hoists for rescue operations, spotlights for nighttime interventions, Euroflir 410 electro optical systems by Safran, onboard armaments and electronic warfare solutions ensuring aircraft protection. The agreement also includes a full support, training and technical assistance package.

At the international level, more than 360 H225 and H225M are currently in service, accumulating nearly one million flight hours. These aircraft are operated by some of the most advanced armed forces in the world, including those of France, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

With this new acquisition, Morocco strengthens its strategic posture, further secures its airspace and confirms its status as a regional power equipped with a modern, professional and continuously evolving military force.
