Moroccan Sahara: Italian Media Widely Echo Spanish and International Support for the Autonomy Initiative Under Moroccan Sovereignty

Several leading Italian media outlets, including Agencia ANSA, Italpress, and AGC News, have recently devoted extensive coverage to Spain’s renewed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Western Sahara region. This media momentum reflects a growing interest across Europe in a political solution based on realism and international consensus.

It should be recalled that in a joint statement issued following a meeting held in Madrid with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, praised the “excellence of bilateral relations,” affirming that they are currently at “the best moment in our shared history.” This strategic dialogue served as an opportunity to reaffirm Spain’s support for the Autonomy Plan proposed by Rabat in 2007, which is recognized as the “most serious, realistic, and credible” basis for achieving a mutually acceptable political solution under the auspices of the United Nations.

This support falls in line with the roadmap signed on April 7, 2022, between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, which marked a major shift in Spain’s position, now aligned with a growing international dynamic in favor of the autonomy plan.

For his part, Nasser Bourita reiterated that Morocco’s proposal constitutes “the main pillar of initiatives” for a sustainable solution to the regional dispute. He emphasized that Spain’s position is fully in tune with the international consensus, “shared by more than 22 European Union countries and many Arab nations.”

The Madrid meeting took place in a context of consolidating Morocco’s diplomatic position on this strategic issue. Following the support expressed by Washington and Madrid, Paris has also recently reaffirmed its backing for the autonomy plan. After a meeting held on Monday with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot, Morocco’s Foreign Minister received confirmation that France considers the Moroccan initiative to be ‘the only basis’ for achieving a just, lasting, and negotiated solution, in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

This wave of support underscores the growing global recognition of Morocco’s initiative in international diplomacy. For Morocco, it represents a clear course and a strategic orientation guided by the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in favor of lasting peace, regional stability, and shared development throughout the Euro-Mediterranean and African regions.
