A Historic Diplomatic Shift: Belgium on the Verge of Recognizing Moroccan Sovereignty Over Its Sahara

A major diplomatic development has taken place in the Belgian Federal Parliament, where the Reformist Movement (MR), one of the country’s most influential parties, has officially submitted a proposal urging the Belgian Government to recognize Morocco’s full and complete sovereignty over its southern provinces.

(Georges-Louis Bouchez, President of the MR, officially recognizes the Moroccan Sahara.)

This initiative was led by Georges-Louis Bouchez, President of the MR, who justified this stance based on the conclusions of his recent visit to the cities of Laâyoune and Dakhla. During his visit, Bouchez witnessed firsthand the dynamic economic development, modern infrastructure, and remarkable stability prevailing in the region under Moroccan administration. He described the situation as a “model of success,” calling for an end to Belgium’s long-standing position of neutrality on the issue.

In an official statement, Georges-Louis Bouchez asserted that the current geopolitical context requires Belgium to adopt a clear, responsible position aligned with the Kingdom’s strategic interests and in step with the growing international support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, which has been recognized by many influential global capitals.

This marks the first parliamentary initiative of its kind in Belgium, signaling a turning point in the European perception of the Moroccan Sahara issue. The move is part of a growing wave of European support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, which many countries now view as the only credible and serious basis for a durable and realistic solution.

The Francophone Liberal Party also emphasized the importance of strategic cooperation between Belgium and Morocco, particularly in crucial areas such as security, counterterrorism, and migration management. It stressed that such recognition is not only in line with international law but would also contribute to regional stability and strengthen Euro-Mediterranean relations.

By adopting this bold position, Belgium is sending a strong signal of support to Morocco, reaffirming its commitment to the values of peace, stability, and mutually beneficial cooperation. This development paves the way for a redefinition of Belgium’s stance on this strategic issue and could well encourage other European countries to follow suit.
