HM King Mohammed VI Orders Reopening of Morocco’s Embassy in Damascus: A Strong Signal to Syria and the Arab World
In a major diplomatic shift, the Kingdom of Morocco officially announced this Saturday, May 11, the upcoming reopening of its embassy in Damascus, twelve years after it was closed. The announcement was made by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in a message addressed to the heads of state and government gathered in Baghdad for the 34th Arab Summit.

This highly symbolic gesture reflects Morocco’s determination to reaffirm its steadfast position in support of Syria’s territorial integrity and full sovereignty. Through this message, the King also expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the brotherly Syrian people in their pursuit of freedom, security, and stability.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to support the political process in Syria and to revive the historic ties between Rabat and Damascus, in a spirit of mutual cooperation that benefits both peoples,” emphasized the Sovereign.
This decision comes amid a regional context marked by numerous challenges, where Arab solidarity is more than ever a strategic imperative. By reopening its diplomatic mission in Damascus, Morocco confirms its role as a bridge between Arab nations and its dedication to a diplomacy of dialogue, moderation, and rapprochement.
The resumption of diplomatic relations between Rabat and Damascus thus paves the way for a new era of bilateral cooperation and may encourage other Arab countries to follow this constructive path of normalization.
