Morocco–Guatemala: A Strong Friendship and Unwavering Support for the Kingdom’s Sovereignty Over Its Sahara

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, received his Guatemalan counterpart, Carlos Ramiro Martínez. The meeting underscored the strengthening of an exemplary and dynamic bilateral relationship.

This visit carries both symbolic and political significance, taking place on the eve of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Guatemala. It also follows a recent wave of positive momentum between the two countries, particularly after the noteworthy visit on February 4 by Guatemala’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monica Bolaños, and the second session of political consultations held shortly after in Rabat.

Clear and Consistent Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty

The issue of national sovereignty was at the heart of the discussions. Morocco reiterated its deep appreciation for Guatemala’s steadfast and unambiguous position in support of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.

A pivotal moment came on December 1, 2022, when Guatemala officially opened a Consulate General in Dakhla. This was a bold diplomatic move that provided concrete recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

Guatemala has also remained one of Morocco’s most reliable allies within international bodies. At the UN’s Special Committee on Decolonization (C24), Guatemala consistently speaks out in defense of Morocco’s position. In February, Monica Bolaños made a firm declaration: “The Republic of Guatemala believes that the final solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara lies in the autonomy initiative, in respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.”

A Relationship Built on Solidarity and Mutual Respect

The recent visit to Rabat by Guatemala’s ambassador, Marco Tulio Gustavo Chicas Sosa, accompanied by Consul General in Dakhla, Williams Haroldo Cordón Loyo, further illustrates the depth of cooperation between the two nations. Their trip reflected a shared determination to turn this friendship into concrete projects and partnerships.

Amid attempts at destabilization within the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), Guatemalan lawmakers acted quickly and firmly. On June 12, 2025, in response to an isolated move by the left-wing parliamentary group (GPI) seeking to spread separatist rhetoric, they issued a clear statement of disassociation, strongly reaffirming their commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Diplomacy of Respect and a Shared Future

The talks between Bourita and Martínez served as an opportunity to reaffirm the vision laid out by King Mohammed VI for a South-South partnership rooted in mutual respect, complementarity, and shared ambition.

Bound by common values and a unified vision on major regional and international challenges, Morocco and Guatemala now aim to deepen their cooperation across various sectors including economy, education, environment, and technology, continuing to build on a fraternal alliance that is steadily growing stronger.
