Morocco-Guatemala Ties Are Strong and Promising- FM
Rabat - Relations between Morocco and Guatemala are strong and hold promising prospects, grounded in mutual respect and continued coordination on global issues, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, said Thursday in Rabat.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, Bourita noted that HM King Mohammed VI and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo de León are “firmly convinced that geographical distance is no barrier to establishing robust and exemplary South-South cooperation, as illustrated by the ties between Morocco and Guatemala.”
Bourita also thanked Guatemala for its consistent support on the Moroccan Sahara issue, welcoming its position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces. He recalled that Guatemala was among the first Central and South American nations to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla in December 2022.
Regarding his talks with Martinez Alvarado, Bourita said both sides agreed to institutionalize political dialogue through annual meetings alternating between Morocco and Guatemala.
“We also agreed that the economic dimension of our relations must be further enhanced to match the strength of our political and diplomatic ties. Business leaders are encouraged to be part of this momentum,” he said.
In this regard, Bourita announced plans to hold a Moroccan Economic Week in Guatemala by year-end, with the participation of business and public sector representatives, and noted that a Moroccan Economic Forum could be held in Guatemala in 2026 to mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
The two countries also agreed on the need to expedite the signing of a bilateral investment protection agreement, which is currently under negotiation, and to expand cooperation in strategic sectors including food security and renewable energy.
“We also agreed to establish a bilateral dialogue on security and migration, given the shared challenges in these areas,” Bourita added, saying the initiative would foster experience-sharing and open up new areas of cooperation.
Bourita underscored that political dialogue continues at regional and global levels, pointing to Guatemala’s key role in Central America and in multilateral organizations.
On this occasion, Bourita praised the reform efforts led by President Arévalo, citing his commitment to governance, transparency, rule of law, social justice, and anti-corruption measures.
This reform-oriented vision has generated strong international interest, he said, noting that Morocco is closely following and supporting these efforts in the interest of regional stability, sustainable development, and the rule of law.
Bourita concluded by reaffirming Morocco’s readiness, under the leadership of HM the King, to support President Arévalo’s initiatives aimed at boosting development and stability in Guatemala.
