Belgium Set to Recognize Morocco’s Territorial Integrity: A Blow to Algeria’s Military Junta

After France, Spain, and Portugal, Belgium is now moving toward a historic recognition of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Moroccan Sahara by the end of 2025. According to Africa Intelligence, the Belgian Federal Parliament is expected to adopt a resolution officially affirming Morocco’s sovereignty over its Southern Provinces, delivering yet another crushing setback to Algeria’s military junta, trapped in separatist illusions and its anti-Moroccan obsession.

This strategic shift was confirmed during a visit to Rabat by Georges-Louis Bouchez, President of the Reformist Movement (MR), accompanied by Brussels Deputy Amine Boudjellal. The two were received by Morocco’s Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi.

Diplomatic signals have been multiplying in recent months. Bernard Quintin, then Belgium’s interim Minister of Foreign Affairs, had already described the Moroccan Plan as a “serious basis” during his January visit to Rabat. Now serving as Minister of the Interior, he reiterated that stance in July in Brussels on the occasion of the Throne Day, going further by declaring the Moroccan Plan a “very solid basis” for resolving the issue.

The MR party, which has been spearheading this political initiative, believes it can rally a parliamentary majority. None of the parties in the ruling coalition known as Arizonane has openly opposed this direction. Even the Flemish socialists (Vooruit), traditionally aligned with UN positions, are avoiding direct confrontation. More significantly, some French-speaking socialist MPs, including Ahmed Laaouej and Latifa Aït Baala, are pushing for Belgium’s foreign policy to align with Morocco’s pragmatic approach.

With more than 700,000 Belgians of Moroccan origin—representing nearly 6 percent of the population—openly opposing Rabat would amount to political suicide for many Belgian parties.

An isolated Algerian junta

Against this diplomatic momentum, the reaction from Algeria’s military rulers has fooled no one. Humiliated on the international stage, the junta clings to a dying separatist project, sustained by billions of petrodollars wasted on lobbying and media propaganda. Yet these sterile maneuvers are colliding with reality: the global community increasingly acknowledges the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only viable solution.
