Guelmim: A Landmark Gold Discovery Could Propel Morocco Among the World’s Leading Producers

An unprecedented mining discovery has turned the spotlight on the Guelmim region. According to a report published on September 1, 2025, by DiscoveryAlert, no fewer than 34 gold-bearing quartz veins have been identified there, with exceptionally high grades ranging from 6 g/t to 300 g/t. Such figures are rare on an international scale and could profoundly reshape Morocco’s gold landscape.

Exploration work on the concession revealed a mineralized system of remarkable scale. The veins, oriented northwest to southeast, extend beyond 100 meters in depth and span surface widths of 40 centimeters to 1.5 meters. Early samples confirm grades well above global standards, considering that many profitable mines operate with only 1 to 2 g/t. This geological continuity suggests a robust deposit rather than an isolated “rich pocket,” reinforcing the strategic importance of Guelmim for Morocco’s mining future.

A Transformative Potential for the National Economy

With gold production estimated at 6.8 tonnes in 2022 (USGS data), Morocco remains a secondary player on the world stage. But the development of a deposit on the scale of Guelmim could elevate the country to a new level, even in the face of fluctuating gold prices. Very high-grade deposits are particularly well-positioned to remain competitive throughout market cycles.

This discovery also ties into Morocco’s already diverse mining portfolio: phosphates, copper, lithium, titanium, and rare earths—all strategic resources that confirm the Kingdom’s role as a key supplier of critical raw materials.

The Guelmim deposit lies within the Precambrian basement of the Anti-Atlas, crisscrossed by regional faults conducive to mineralizing fluids. The analysis also links the area to the historical Dara’a river basin, known for its gold since antiquity. Field observations—including banded quartz, breccias, and alteration halos—correspond to the classic characteristics of hydrothermal deposits. Gold is present both as free grains in quartz and in association with sulfides, an encouraging sign for efficient metallurgical recovery.

The program, led by OLAH Palace Trading, is based on systematic trenching, shafts, and sampling campaigns, validated through strict quality control protocols (QA/QC). Next steps include diamond drilling, 3D modeling of the veins, and international resource classification. In parallel, metallurgical tests will determine the optimal extraction and processing methods to assess the project’s industrial viability.

Located in a semi-arid zone, the project will need to incorporate water-efficient solutions, effluent recycling, and renewable energy use, notably solar. On the social front, OLAH Palace Trading highlights job creation, training, and regional benefits, with the goal of securing the “social license” essential for sustainable mining operations.

Towards a New African Gold Hub

Moving from discovery to production generally takes 5 to 10 years, but very high-grade deposits sometimes allow for accelerated development by targeting the richest zones early on.

If upcoming drilling campaigns confirm the initial results, Guelmim could emerge as one of Africa’s major gold hubs, giving Morocco a new dimension in the global supply of strategic metals.
