HACA Participates in UNESCO Conference on Information Integrity in Cape Verde
Praia - The High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA) took part from September 3 to 5 in the international conference organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Praia, focused on preserving information integrity in West Africa and the Sahel.
The conference brought together Ministers of Communication, heads of African regulatory bodies, data protection authorities, electoral commission presidents, experts, as well as representatives from civil society and academic circles. The high-level segment of the event was attended by Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.
Speaking during the thematic discussions, HACA President Latifa Akharbach emphasized the inextricable link, in today’s globalized and digitized media environment, between the degradation of information integrity and the broader erosion of knowledge integrity.
Quoting a HACA press release, Akharbach also stressed the need for African countries to implement public policies that combine independent regulation, support for professional journalism, protection of fundamental freedoms, media literacy, digital sovereignty consolidation, and international cooperation.
These efforts, she noted, are vital to safeguarding democracy, social cohesion, and information sovereignty in a world saturated with digital content.
Organized with the support of UN agencies and international development organizations, the conference aimed to strengthen the resilience of public trust in information and affirm citizens’ right to reliable information as a public good.
