Geneva: Opening of the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union with Moroccan Participation

The 151st Assembly and related meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) officially opened on Monday in Geneva, with a significant Moroccan parliamentary delegation led by the President of the House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid.

This session brings together several hundred parliamentarians and experts from 120 countries, under the central theme: “Ensuring Respect for Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis.”

Held in a global context marked by rising humanitarian crises, the assembly will highlight the central role of parliaments in protecting international humanitarian law, supporting independent relief efforts, and promoting multilateral action to assist populations affected by conflicts. According to figures from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and OCHA, nearly 310 million people worldwide currently require humanitarian aid.

In addition to high-level debates, the Moroccan delegation is participating in the work of various standing committees, specialized forums for women and young parliamentarians, thematic workshops, and meetings of the IPU’s governing bodies.

Key priorities addressed during this assembly include the protection of vulnerable groups such as displaced persons, women, youth, minorities, and populations affected by food insecurity and disease; recognition and support for victims of illegal international adoptions, a topic championed by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights; post-conflict peacebuilding, disarmament prevention, international taxation, economic justice, and climate change mitigation.

On the eve of the assembly’s official inauguration, the Moroccan delegation attended the 39th Extraordinary Congress of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union on Sunday, as well as meetings of the geopolitical groups in which Morocco participates.

During the event, Mr. Ould Errachid, accompanied by members of the House of Councillors’ bureau—including Miloud Masside (UMT), Mohammed Salem Benmassoud (UGTM), Mustapha Moucharik (RNI), Abderrahman Oiffa (PAM)—and senior parliamentary officials, including Secretary-General El Assad Zerouali, held a series of bilateral meetings with presidents of parliaments from friendly and brotherly countries.

Morocco is also represented at the 151st session by members of its IPU parliamentary section, including deputies Ahmed Touizi (PAM Group), Mustapha Reddad (RNI Group), Ahmed El-Aalem (Istiqlal Group), and Khaddouj Slassi (Socialist Group—Opposition Ittihadie), and councillors Kamal Ait Mik (RNI) and Hassan Choumaiss (PAM), along with the Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, Najib El Khadi.
