Donald Trump’s Adviser Massad Boulos Reaffirms: Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Its Sahara Is Irreversible
The issue of the Moroccan Sahara continues to take center stage on the international diplomatic scene. Massad Boulos, Senior Adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump for Arab and African Affairs, stated that Washington remains firmly committed to supporting Morocco’s full and complete sovereignty over its Sahara. He also called on Morocco and Algeria to begin direct negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations without delay, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive, realistic and mutually acceptable political solution.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia broadcast on Monday, the senior American official emphasized that “Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara is a fundamental and irreversible matter for President Donald Trump.” He added that the U.S. administration is working daily with Rabat and Algiers to advance the drafting of a balanced UN resolution that could help bring the two sides closer together.
The autonomy initiative, the only serious basis for resolution
Massad Boulos stressed that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, presented by the Kingdom in 2007, represents “the best possible framework to resolve this conflict that has lasted for decades.” He also referred to the strategic vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, recalling the Royal Speech of August 6, 2025, in which the Sovereign outlined new perspectives for lasting peace and stronger regional integration.
According to the American adviser, the Trump administration is looking forward to the upcoming Royal Speech on November 6, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Green March, which he said could represent a decisive new stage in the settlement process.
Washington strengthens Morocco’s position amid Algerian maneuvers
This statement comes in a context of heightened diplomatic tension, following the strong rejection by Algeria and the Polisario Front of the American draft resolution currently being discussed at the UN Security Council. The text enshrines the Moroccan Autonomy Plan under national sovereignty as the only realistic basis for negotiation, sparking anger from the Algerian regime and its separatist proxy, the Polisario, which continues to cling to an outdated position disconnected from regional realities.
Massad Boulos recalled that the United States prioritizes stability and regional cooperation in the face of rising instability across the Sahel and North Africa. He also referred to his visit to Algeria in July 2025, during which he met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to discuss ways to promote a pragmatic approach that serves peace and shared economic interests.
A constant and coherent American commitment
This new statement reinforces the position already expressed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reiterated just days ago that Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative remains the only serious, credible and lasting basis for a political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
As the fiftieth anniversary of the Green March approaches, a powerful symbol of Morocco’s national unity and historical legitimacy over its southern provinces, Washington is reaffirming more than ever the strength of its strategic alliance with Rabat. This stance highlights the Kingdom’s clear-sighted diplomacy while further isolating Algeria’s military regime, which remains trapped in its futile attempts to sustain an artificial conflict contrary to history and international law.
