Morocco’s Top Senator Holds Talks with Morocco-EU JPC Delegation
Rabat - Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, held, on Tuesday in Rabat, a meeting with a delegation from the Morocco-European Union (EU) Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), in a bid to bolster the privileged ties of partnership between the two parties.
The meeting with the delegation of the European Parliament, led by Ruggero Razza, who co-chairs this body, provided an opportunity to underline the depth and solidity of Moroccan-European ties, founded on a common history, geographical proximity and shared interests, the Upper House said in a press release.
They also highlighted the firm will of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to promote the Kingdom’s material and human capital and to pursue the path of reforms and global development in all regions of the country.
In this context, Ould Errachid recalled “Morocco’s special place for the European Union since it was granted advanced status in 2008,” a comprehensive framework for dialogue and cooperation that goes beyond economic and trade issues to encompass political, security, energy, and social areas.
The Upper House Speaker stressed that “the EU remains Morocco’s leading trading partner,” noting that trade between the two parties accounts for a significant share of the Kingdom’s foreign trade, adding that this cooperation contributes to the gradual integration of the Moroccan economy into the European internal market.
Speaking on the issues of security and migration, the two sides reiterated the strategic character of cooperation between Morocco and EU in counter-terrorism and the fight against organized crime and illegal immigration.
In this respect, the European delegation commended Morocco’s pioneering efforts under the wise Leadership of His Majesty the King, in managing migration flows and fighting against human trafficking networks, underlining the EU’s support for the development and social action programs implemented in Morocco, aiming to remedy the deep causes of migration and strengthen local development.
Discussions also delved into cooperation prospects in the fields of energy and environmental transition, with the two sides highlighting Morocco’s leading role in the development of renewable energies, mainly solar and wind.
They also noted the Kingdom’s active participation in the initiatives of the “Union for the Mediterranean” and in electricity interconnection and green energy projects, thereby helping to strengthen security of supply and achieve the carbon neutrality objectives of both partners.
