Moroccan Sahara: The People of Laâyoune and Dakhla Celebrate the New UN Resolution in a Spirit of Pride and Unity

The residents of Laâyoune, the capital of Morocco’s southern provinces, celebrated on Friday evening in an atmosphere filled with pride and national unity following the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of the new resolution on the Moroccan Sahara.

As soon as the announcement was made in New York, Laâyoune was illuminated in the colors of the Moroccan flag. Car horns, ululations, and patriotic songs echoed through Mohammed VI, Mecca, and Al Kairaouane boulevards, as large crowds converged on El Méchouar Square in scenes of pure joy and national pride.

Waving Moroccan flags and holding portraits of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, children, youth, and families expressed with one voice their unwavering attachment to the Kingdom’s unity and their full support for Morocco’s diplomatic efforts under the wise leadership of the Sovereign to bring a definitive end to this artificial dispute.

“This is a historic day for us here in Laâyoune,” said jubilant citizens in statements to MAP, describing the resolution as “a resounding victory.” They expressed their pride in a decision that will put an end to a conflict that has lasted far too long.

They added that the resolution is “the fruit of 26 years of tireless work under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.” They emphasized that this historic day will be remembered as one of the landmark moments for all Moroccans, especially as it coincides with the anniversary of the Glorious Green March. The citizens hailed it as “a diplomatic victory,” the result of Morocco’s consistent and wise diplomacy guided by the Monarch.

Patriotic songs and slogans in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity continued to resonate throughout Laâyoune’s streets, as the crowd, carried by immense national fervor, celebrated the adoption of the UN resolution marking another milestone in the Moroccan Sahara issue.

In Dakhla, Friday night turned into a national celebration following the adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution recognizing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the realistic and solid framework for a definitive resolution of the Sahara issue.

As soon as the news broke, groups of citizens, families, youth, and local figures poured into the city’s main avenues, driven by a shared patriotic spirit and a deep sense of pride and gratitude for this major diplomatic achievement.

On Al Massira Avenue, at Hassan II Square, and along the city’s scenic corniche, large crowds waving flags and scarves in national colors sang patriotic chants and shouted slogans reaffirming the Kingdom’s unity. The atmosphere was electric — smiling faces, blaring horns, and joyful ululations gave the city the air of a grand popular celebration.

“This decision confirms what we experience here every day: stability, development, and a full sense of belonging to Morocco,” said Hamza, 25, surrounded by friends who came to celebrate the UN resolution.

In cafés, on terraces, and along the seaside, the same joyful spirit prevailed. Families took photos, children waved flags, and groups of young people broke into spontaneous songs and filmed videos to immortalize the moment.

“We always knew Morocco’s diplomacy would prevail,” said Khadija, a mother of two. “Today we celebrate a victory of perseverance, patience, and hard work.”

Beyond the patriotic emotion, many residents emphasized the importance of this resolution for the future of the region, now defined by major development projects, sustained economic growth, and a clear ambition to become a regional and continental hub.

Celebrations continued late into the night in a festive yet orderly atmosphere, reflecting the civility and commitment of a population deeply attached to the Kingdom’s foremost national cause.

On this memorable evening, Dakhla once again revealed the face of a united, confident, and forward-looking city, celebrating a decisive step in consolidating Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and advancing the development of the southern provinces.
