Moroccans Light Up Times Square in Joy Over Landmark UN Resolution on Sahara
New York - The Moroccan community in New York gathered Saturday night in a joyful and patriotic celebration at Times Square, Manhattan, following the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a historic resolution on the Moroccan Sahara.

Waving national flags and holding portraits of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, they sang the national anthem and chanted patriotic songs celebrating Morocco’s territorial integrity in a festive, family-like atmosphere.
For many, it was not just a celebration but rather the culmination of decades of hope and steadfast belief in their homeland’s fair cause.
“This resolution crowns the sustained efforts of the Kingdom under the leadership of His Majesty the King,” said Allal Boutajangout, professor of neurology and neuroscience at New York University.
He emphasized that Morocco’s tireless diplomatic actions, led by the Sovereign’s enlightened vision, had borne fruit by confirming once and for all the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the only basis for resolving the Sahara issue.
Among the crowd was Saadia Aboutoume, a 70-year-old resident of Queens, who could hardly contain her joy. “This UN resolution represents the natural outcome of a dispute that has lasted far too long,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “It’s the result of the efforts and sacrifices Moroccans have made for decades.”
Echoing that sentiment, Mohamed Alami, a Moroccan journalist based in New York, hailed what he called a “historic diplomatic victory that fills every Moroccan with pride, wherever they may be.”
“Our joy is doubled today, as the Security Council vote coincides with the 50th anniversary of the glorious Green March,” he said, noting that this diplomatic success is the crowning achievement of the initiatives and High Directives of His Majesty the King.”
For Said Sadeq, an engineer who attended the celebration, the night felt profoundly symbolic. “This is a historic day we’ve awaited for half a century,” he said.
“All Moroccans, wherever they live, remain deeply attached to their homeland and constantly united behind their visionary Monarch, who has tirelessly worked to safeguard Morocco’s supreme interests.”
As the crowd waved red flags under the bright neon lights of Times Square, their chants of Long live the King! and Long live Morocco! echoed through the night, in an emotional reminder that even thousands of miles away, the spirit of national unity burns as brightly as ever.
