Tangier joins the UNESCO Creative Cities Network
The municipality of Tangier announced on Monday that the city has officially joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of literature, following the decision made public by the Organization on October 30.

In a statement, the municipality emphasized that this “prestigious” international distinction crowns an authentic cultural journey and recognizes Tangier’s historical role as a city of creativity, diversity, and openness, endowed with a rich intellectual, literary, and civilizational heritage deeply rooted in its identity.
This achievement is also the result of an integrated institutional project carried out under the supervision of the Office of the President of the Municipality of Tangier, the same source noted. The project focused on enhancing the city’s cultural memory, cataloging its creative assets, and mobilizing local partners involved in the initiative.
“We are not only aiming for Tangier to be listed among the creative cities, but we are working collectively to make it one of the most creative cities in the world,” said the President of the Municipality of Tangier, Mounir Laymouri, as quoted in the statement. He added that this designation marks a strategic step in an ambitious cultural path that positions literature as a driving force for territorial development and cultural openness.
This recognition places Tangier among an international network of over 400 Creative Cities worldwide, only 53 of which are in the field of literature, thus offering the city renewed visibility on the global cultural stage, along with opportunities for exchange and cooperation with other leading creative capitals.
The municipality of Tangier expressed its full commitment to implementing the requirements of this designation through an integrated action plan focused on public readings, publishing, translation, literary residencies, and the promotion of local cultural initiatives, in line with national guidelines and through a participatory and sustainable approach.
The municipality also announced the launch of a consultation and dialogue process with the city’s various cultural stakeholders, with the aim of developing a joint action program that will consolidate this achievement and help make Tangier an international literary platform and a major cultural actor within the UNESCO network.
