Nicolas Sarkozy Released from Prison and Placed Under Judicial Supervision Until His Trial
After being incarcerated since October 21 at La Santé prison, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to be released and will soon be reunited with his family. The decision, which takes immediate effect, means he is expected to leave the penitentiary within the next few hours.
Sarkozy had been imprisoned on October 21 following his conviction to five years in prison for “criminal association” in the so-called Libyan financing case. During his detention, his wife Carla Bruni regularly posted messages of support on Instagram, often accompanied by songs filled with emotional meaning.
Last week, Cécilia Sarkozy, his former wife, publicly expressed her concern during a conference organized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “My ex-husband must be released quickly. He is over 70 years old, he has a family waiting for him and suffering greatly. I have a thought for his wife, Carla, because this is very hard for her; she has a 14-year-old daughter. I don’t know how she manages to endure all this. I send her all my love and support,” she said.
The appeal trial is expected to begin in March, although the exact dates have not yet been officially announced. They should be communicated to the lawyers on Thursday during a meeting at the Court of Appeal dedicated to the case.
