Marrakech: Morocco Bets on the Desalination–Advanced Technology Alliance to Build its Water Future
Morocco is firmly investing in the combination of water desalination and advanced hydraulic technologies to secure its resources and build a resilient future in the face of water stress, experts said on Monday in Marrakech during a panel held on the sidelines of the 19th World Water Congress.
The panel highlighted Morocco’s significant achievements in the field of water desalination and the integration of innovative technological solutions to improve governance efficiency of water resources at the national level.
Participants recalled that Morocco has positioned itself among the most advanced African countries in developing desalination plants, thanks to a proactive strategy based on the diversification of sources, the integration of renewable energy and the energy optimization of facilities.
They emphasized that the increased use of water desalination, particularly in Casablanca, Agadir, Dakhla and Laayoune, represents a major pillar of national water security, helping to meet urban, industrial and agricultural needs while reducing pressure on groundwater reserves.
Panelists also highlighted the importance of using advanced technologies such as high-performance reverse osmosis, the digitalization of hydraulic networks, telemetry systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions that support demand forecasting, optimize distribution and reduce water loss.
“These innovations help improve energy efficiency, reduce production costs and strengthen the sustainability of hydraulic infrastructure while supporting the development of specialized industrial ecosystems focused on innovative water solutions,” they continued.
Experts also stressed the need to strengthen the circular water economy through the reuse of treated wastewater, energy recovery in desalination plants and the valorization of brine, contributing to Morocco’s water transition.
They also called for reinforcing technical capacities, promoting public-private partnerships and integrating hydrotech startups to support innovation and optimal management of this vital resource.
Finally, speakers recalled that “the success of the Moroccan experience is based on strategic alignment between hydraulic infrastructure, renewable energy and digital technologies, ensuring the Kingdom’s resilience against climate challenges.”
Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the World Water Congress, co-organized until December 5 by the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the International Water Resources Association (IWRA), offers an opportunity to explore innovative solutions, strategies and adaptive approaches for water resources in an ever-changing world.
The program of this 19th edition includes a ministerial round-table, four high-level panels, more than 140 technical sessions led by international experts, parallel events dedicated to specialized themes and a large exhibition space showcasing innovative water projects and technologies.
The conclusions of this large-scale event will be reflected in the “Marrakech Declaration”, a collective call bringing together decision-makers, scientists and practitioners to strengthen the link between science, policy and action, and accelerate global mobilization for water preservation.
