Safi: Emergency meeting held to implement exceptional measures in response to flooding

An emergency meeting was held on Monday at the headquarters of the Prefecture of the Province of Safi, following the floods and exceptional rainfall that hit the city, causing loss of life and significant material damage.

Chaired by the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region and Governor of the Prefecture of Marrakech, Khatib El Hebil, and attended by the Governor of the Province of Safi, Mohammed Fettah, the President of the Regional Council, representatives of regional security authorities, and officials from the relevant decentralized services, the meeting provided an opportunity to assess the city’s overall situation in the aftermath of the floods and their repercussions.

Discussions focused on evaluating the damage recorded in the various neighborhoods affected by the violent floodwaters, as well as on the urgent measures to be adopted to mitigate the effects of the floods and ensure the safety of citizens. Emphasis was placed on mobilizing all necessary human and logistical resources, strengthening coordination among the different stakeholders, and maintaining a maximum state of alert in order to limit the consequences of the floods and address their effects swiftly, while ensuring appropriate support and assistance.

It should be noted that the death toll resulting from the exceptional storm rainfall that occurred on Sunday evening, which caused sudden and violent flooding, has risen to 37 victims, according to data provided by local authorities.

Interventions by public authorities, civil protection services, law enforcement, and all involved actors are still ongoing, with search, rescue, and assistance operations continuing for the affected population.
