Sánchez Calls on Strengthening EU-Morocco Strategic Partnership
Madrid - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on Thursday in Madrid for developing strengthened strategic partnerships between the European Union (EU) and its Southern neighbors, with Morocco at the forefront, in order to promote a space of shared prosperity and stability.

Speaking at the opening of the Conference of Spanish Ambassadors accredited abroad, held on January 8–9 under the theme “Spain, a Global Actor,” Sánchez emphasized that strengthening relations with Morocco is among the top priorities of Spain’s and the EU’s foreign policy for 2026.
The Spanish head of government described it as “urgent” for the European Union to update its cooperation tools to consolidate a “peaceful and secure” southern neighborhood. In this regard, he announced that Spain will propose to the European Commission, in the coming months, the establishment of “enhanced strategic partnerships” with key partner countries, including Morocco, Senegal, and Mauritania.
Sánchez also stressed the importance of basing these partnerships on understanding, dialogue, and mutual respect, in a global geopolitical context he described as “particularly complex.
