Washington Buries Algiers’ Illusions: The United States Imposes the Autonomy Plan for the Moroccan Sahara
The recent visit of a Polisario Front delegation to Washington only served to confirm a reality that is now undeniable: Sahrawi separatism, artificially sustained by the Algerian military regime, has reached a historical dead end. Far from representing a diplomatic breakthrough, this trip resulted in a sharp clarification from the United States, which recalled, plainly and unequivocally, that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only credible, realistic and internationally recognized framework for definitively resolving the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
The American message, delivered firmly during a direct exchange with a senior intelligence official, sounded like a clear rejection for the Polisario and, above all, for its sponsors in Algiers. There is no longer any question of reopening obsolete debates, nor of reviving independence illusions that the international community has relegated to the margins of History. The wording was unequivocal: “this is the only available framework.”
Faced with this blunt clarity, the Polisario delegation distinguished itself by a revealing silence. No arguments, no alternative vision, no capacity to propose a viable outcome. A muteness that speaks volumes about the state of political decay of a movement that has become trapped in its internal contradictions and its total dependence on the Algerian regime.
Behind the Polisario, it is indeed the Algerian military regime that once again stands exposed. A power obsessed with manufacturing artificial conflicts to conceal its own internal failures, its chronic authoritarianism and its inability to offer a future to its youth. By persisting in supporting a separatist project with no legal basis, no popular legitimacy and no diplomatic future, Algiers is laying bare its growing isolation on the international stage.
The United States, like many other major actors, has now made its position clear: the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the only serious, responsible path capable of ensuring regional stability. Everything else amounts to a headlong rush, frozen ideology and a stubborn refusal to face reality.
The Washington episode thus marks a symbolic turning point: the Polisario is no longer an actor offering alternatives, but one compelled either to align or to disappear from diplomatic radars. As for the Algerian regime, it will sooner or later have to account for having sacrificed entire generations to a fabricated cause, instrumentalized to the detriment of peace, Maghreb integration and the dignity of the populations sequestered in the Tindouf camps. History moves forward. And it is moving forward without separatism.
