CAF: Patrice Motsepe Convenes an Emergency Executive Committee Meeting This Friday, February 13

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has convened an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee to be held this Friday, February 13, according to information reported by several media sources.

This exceptional meeting will take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and comes amid intense controversy surrounding the most recent Africa Cup of Nations. One of the main items on the agenda will concern a review of the CAF Disciplinary Code, particularly the provisions relating to the withdrawal of a team or national side before the referee’s final whistle. This reflection directly echoes the incidents that occurred during the CAN 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco.

The meeting is also expected to rule on the future of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026. In recent days, persistent rumors have suggested either a possible withdrawal by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation or an official request for a postponement, fueling questions within African football circles.

Wishing to encourage open debate, Patrice Motsepe reportedly decided not to lock the agenda, allowing members of the Executive Committee to raise other issues deemed to be priorities.

Among the topics that could also be addressed are African refereeing and the use of VAR, which have been at the center of widespread criticism since the end of the continental tournament, with some observers pointing to shortcomings in terms of consistency, training, and technological management.

At the end of January, the CAF President had already expressed his deep disappointment over incidents described as “unacceptable” that marked the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco. He had then reaffirmed his commitment to respecting and enforcing the decisions taken by the Confederation’s disciplinary bodies.

In a statement published on the official CAF website, Patrice Motsepe specified that this Executive Committee meeting, the organization’s highest decision-making authority outside the annual General Assembly, aims to reexamine the regulations in force, including the Disciplinary Code.

He also emphasized CAF’s determination to strengthen the financial and technical resources allocated to refereeing, in order to ensure that African referees, VAR operators, and match commissioners reach “the highest standards of quality, integrity, impartiality, and competence,” comparable to those of the world’s leading governing bodies.
