Donald Trump Evacuated After Gunfire at a Gala in Washington, Suspect Arrested

The President of the United States was evacuated during the night from Saturday to Sunday from the Hilton Hotel in Washington, where he was attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The suspected gunman was arrested and is due to appear in court on Monday.

Fear and confusion. On Saturday evening, Donald Trump appeared to have once again escaped a deadly assassination attempt, although the results of the police investigation will be needed to confirm exactly what happened. The incident took place in a particularly symbolic location, the Washington Hilton, where former President Ronald Reagan was seriously wounded by an assassin in 1981.

On Saturday, the President of the United States was seated with his wife Melania and Vice President JD Vance at the annual banquet of the White House press association when gunshots rang out outside the hall. Guests did not immediately understand what was happening, but security services quickly moved in to escort the president and his entourage to safety. Other attendees were ordered to get on the ground.

“What a night in D.C.,” Donald Trump commented shortly afterward on Truth Social, before announcing that the Secret Service and law enforcement had done a “fantastic” job and apprehended the shooter. He also posted a photo of a shirtless man lying face down on the Hilton corridor carpet, his hands cuffed behind his back.

The suspect, described as a “lone wolf” by Donald Trump, is reportedly a 31-year-old Californian named Cole Tomas Allen. According to his social media accounts, he graduated in 2017 from the prestigious Caltech university, works as a teacher, and also develops video games. Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed his identity. Currently in custody, he is expected to appear before the courts on Monday.

The gunman was carrying several weapons and was reportedly detected by a metal detector, leading to an exchange of gunfire. A Secret Service agent was struck but was saved by his bulletproof vest. There do not appear to have been any fatalities.
