Back to School 2025-2026: Around 8.27 Million Students Return to Classrooms

Of this total, 7.4 million are enrolled in public education, supported by more than 299,000 teachers across 12,441 schools, including 6,886 in rural areas. The ministry also reported that 730,000 children began primary school this year, an increase of 7.4 percent compared to last year.

This rentrée is highlighted by the opening of 169 new schools, including 72 in rural areas, along with six community schools. An additional 2,461 classrooms have been built through expansion projects, and 15 new boarding schools have been established, all in rural regions.

Preschool education continues to expand, with more than 2,500 new classrooms created. The sector now serves around 985,375 children, up 4.5 percent, including 663,000 enrolled in public preschool—representing 67 percent of the total. To improve quality, nearly 2,500 preschool teachers have received initial training, while 13,800 others benefited from continuing education.

The ministry stressed that this academic year marks a key stage in implementing the 2022-2026 roadmap, particularly the “Pioneer Schools” program, which now covers 4,626 primary schools—2,000 more than last year—supported by 75,000 teachers, including 32,000 newly assigned. In total, nearly 2 million pupils are enrolled in primary school, with 640,000 new students this year.

For middle schools, the number of “Pioneer Colleges” has reached 786, up by 554 compared to last year. These schools are staffed by 23,716 teachers, including 16,716 newly recruited, serving 677,586 students, among them 478,000 newcomers. To support this ambitious program, the ministry has provided targeted schools with modern equipment and logistics to create a better learning environment.

Language education is also expanding, with more primary schools offering Amazigh and English now being generalized across middle and high schools.

As part of efforts to promote inclusion, 60 new “second chance” schools have been added this year, bringing total enrollment to 35,000 students, an increase of 6,000.

The ministry also emphasized governance reforms, including the completion of its new organizational structure, the consolidation of contractual management mechanisms, and the continued rollout of the “Integrated School Project” (PEI) aimed at improving performance and administration.

Education Minister Mohamed Saad Berrada officially launched the new school year in Médiouna, Casablanca-Settat region, under the theme “For a Quality School.” On this occasion, he toured several schools in the province.
