Sébastien Lecornu Appointed Prime Minister by Emmanuel Macron

“The President of the Republic has appointed Mr. Sébastien Lecornu Prime Minister. He has tasked him with consulting the political forces represented in Parliament with a view to adopting a national budget and building the agreements needed for decisions in the coming months,” the statement read.

Lecornu’s appointment came shortly after the resignation of François Bayrou earlier that afternoon, following a vote in the National Assembly on Monday evening that withdrew its confidence in him after he sought approval for his budget proposals.

The Élysée added that “following these discussions, it will be up to the new Prime Minister to propose a government to the President of the Republic,” noting that “the Prime Minister’s work will be guided by the defense of our independence and strength, service to the French people, and political and institutional stability for the unity of the country.”

The statement further stressed that “the President of the Republic is convinced that, on this basis, an understanding between political forces is possible, with full respect for everyone’s convictions.”
