Morocco Reaps Rewards of ‘Ambitious’ Strategy of Placing Ports at Center of Economic Development – CEO of UKMPG

Stressing the importance of the projects inaugurated by HM King Mohammed VI on Thursday as part of the restructuring and development of the Casablanca Port Complex, Evans told MAP that many countries can learn from Morocco’s recognition of the crucial role that ports play in today’s and tomorrow’s economy.

He stressed, in this context, that the expansion of the Kingdom’s ports “is welcome,” commending, at the same time, the recent decision by DP World, an international port infrastructure operator, to launch a maritime service directly linking Morocco to the United Kingdom and Northern Europe.

These developments “are a key part of our ambition at UKMPG to further strengthen international links with our major ports.”

Established in 1993, UKMPG is the professional body for the UK’s leading port operators and represents nine of the country’s top ten port operators. The members of this group collectively manage 75% of the UK’s port volumes through 40 ports.

The projects were inaugurated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI as part of the restructuring and development of the Casablanca Port Complex, with the aim of strengthening the economic and tourist influence of this metropolis.

These projects seek to position Casablanca as a leading economic and financial hub on the continent, fully open to the international community.

With investments of around MAD 5 billion, these projects have focused on the development of a fishing port, the construction of a new shipyard, the development of a cruise terminal, and the construction of an administrative complex bringing together all stakeholders of the Port of Casablanca.
