A strategic crossroads of globalization
Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, Tanger Med has established itself as a vital hub linking Europe, Africa and Asia. Every year, 130,000 ships pass through this area, making the Moroccan port a true epicenter of world trade.
Unmatched performance
Since its inauguration in 2007, Tanger Med has risen at an extraordinary pace:
- Africa’s number one port for eight consecutive years;
- Mediterranean leader for five years, ahead of Barcelona, Marseille and Genoa;
- 17th worldwide, with over 10 million containers handled.
Thanks to this infrastructure, Morocco, once ranked 65th in maritime connectivity, is now linked to more than 80 countries and 200 international ports, offering investors direct and rapid access to global markets.
A unique industrial ecosystem
Tanger Med is far more than a port. It is a fully integrated industrial and logistics complex:
- 130,000 jobs created, representing 1% of national GDP.
- An automotive platform exporting 600,000 vehicles each year, produced by Renault and Stellantis.
- A dynamic ecosystem bringing together 1,400 companies in the automotive, aeronautics, electronics and agri-food sectors.
“Here, it’s not just about assembly. We innovate, we manufacture and we export,” stressed Tarik Dourasse.
A geopolitical and sustainable lever
Tanger Med also plays a major geopolitical role in redefining trade routes:
- 35% of traffic with West Africa passes through the port;
- 29% with Europe, 24% with Asia and 15% with the Americas.
At the same time, the port reflects Morocco’s green ambitions. It supplies ships with 100% renewable electricity, has inaugurated the first floating solar park on a breakwater and positions itself as a showcase for green hydrogen.
Looking ahead to 2030
With the 2030 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, Tanger Med is preparing to double its passenger capacity, handle 2,000 trucks per day bound for Europe, and further strengthen its role as a driver of globalization.
“We chose to integrate Tanger Med into the national economy by connecting it to highways, free zones and industries. Morocco does not want to be just a transit point, but a leading player in globalization,” its director concluded.
From the southern shore of the Mediterranean, Tanger Med has become the symbol of a visionary, modern and ambitious Morocco, capable of transforming its aspirations into tangible achievements. A true source of national pride, the port embodies the Kingdom’s future in the global economic arena.
