Aziz Akhannouch at the UN: Morocco’s Autonomy Plan is the Only Realistic and Lasting Solution to the Sahara Issue

In his address on behalf of Morocco at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Akhannouch highlighted the international momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in support of the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

He recalled that a large majority of countries within the international community consider the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as the only pragmatic and credible basis to definitively resolve this regional dispute.

This unequivocal support, he said, demonstrates that it is high time to turn the page on this artificial conflict, in full respect of national sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

From the General Assembly podium, Mr. Akhannouch also underscored the socio-economic transformation taking place in the Southern Provinces, driven by the new development model and the Royal Atlantic initiatives. He noted that this region of the Kingdom now stands as a strategic platform in the service of peace, security and co-development.

The Head of Government further reaffirmed Morocco’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reach a definitive solution to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
