This commemoration, which comes as the Kingdom prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the glorious Green March, eloquently reflects the will of a people to embrace its history and honor the spirit of a visionary King who guided Morocco toward modernity while preserving its plural identity and millennia-old civilization.
Indeed, from the moment of His enthronement in 1961, the late HM Hassan II, may God surround Him with His infinite mercy, faithfully followed the path laid down by His venerated father, the late HM Mohammed V, while strengthening its foundations. He launched major works of state-building and unification, which granted Morocco a privileged place among nations, consolidated its stability, set it on the path of development, and advanced the completion of its territorial integrity.
It was under the reign of the late HM Hassan II that Morocco reinforced its national unity, notably through the recovery of the provinces of Sidi Ifni (June 30, 1969) and Oued Eddahab (August 14, 1979). The keystone of this historic endeavor to complete territorial integrity was, without doubt, the organization of the Green March on November 6, 1975, a peaceful initiative and a memorable epic inscribed in golden letters in the annals of world history, hailed as a model of the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Moreover, the architect of the Green March, the late HM Hassan II, from the earliest years of His reign, recognized the importance of building a strong, independent, and resilient national economy. In 1966, He launched the “policy of dams,” which became a hallmark of His reign. This pioneering policy has proven its worth ever since, and has been of immense benefit during recurring cycles of drought and water shortages that Morocco and several countries in the region later faced.
Coupled with an ambitious agricultural policy, this program firmly established the Kingdom’s agricultural vocation, making the sector a key driver of overall development.
Beyond economic growth, the late Sovereign was deeply committed to ensuring the social well-being of His loyal subjects and to preserving the values of cohesion, solidarity, and mutual support that characterize Moroccan society. To this end, He opened strategic projects aimed, among others, at advancing women’s rights, strengthening the family institution, developing social housing, and promoting respect for human rights and pluralism.
On the international stage, the charisma, insight, and openness of the late HM Hassan II earned Him the respect and admiration of leaders and Heads of State worldwide. Under His wise leadership, Morocco secured a prominent place among nations, made its voice heard in international forums, and played a leading role in numerous regional and global issues.
The actions of the late HM Hassan II, may God rest His soul, in combating colonialism, in fostering peace, and in promoting Africa’s development and prosperity, were recognized globally and earned Him, on November 1, 2022, a Pan-African Prize awarded by Ethiopia in honor of His dedication and contribution to Africa’s emancipation and to Pan-Africanism.
In terms of foreign policy, the late King pursued a clear and balanced vision that advocated openness to the Western world and modernity, while safeguarding Morocco’s identity and roots as an Islamic, Arab, African, and Mediterranean country.
As Commander of the Faithful, the late Sovereign also tirelessly advocated for unity within the Islamic Ummah in the face of threats to the lands of Islam.
By commemorating the 27th anniversary of the passing of the late HM Hassan II, the Moroccan people pay tribute to the memory of a builder King who enabled Morocco to enter fully into the era of modernity. It is also an opportunity for all Moroccans to reaffirm their loyalty and unwavering attachment to the Glorious Alaouite Throne, and to renew their determination to pursue the legacy of the late Sovereign by supporting the great projects initiated by His worthy successor, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God preserve Him, in service of a modern and prosperous Morocco.
