“The qualification of the Atlas Lion Cubs for the U-20 World Cup in Chile is no coincidence. It reflects a coherent development strategy built on solid foundations, clear programs, continuous training, and structured technical and administrative guidance,” Jamal told FIFA in an interview.
He noted that significant and tangible progress has been achieved in the development of football in Morocco at all levels, thanks to the working strategy implemented by the FRMF. Since 2021, these efforts have started to bear fruit.
Among the key developments, he highlighted the Mohammed VI Academy and the national training program involving 14 partner clubs that ensure uniformity in player development. He also pointed out the existence of four national technical centers in Salé, Casablanca, Benguerir, and Laâyoune, emphasizing that both large-scale and high-quality training have become a serious priority.
As a coach who led Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2005 U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands, Jamal reflected on the lessons learned from that experience and compared it to the current generation. He said he sees the same passion for the national jersey and the same sincere desire to succeed among both generations.
However, he also noted some differences: “The 2005 generation sometimes lacked maturity and support,” he said, citing poorly timed career choices, uncontrolled media exposure, and the lack of structured club environments that limited the rise of many talented players.
In contrast, he explained that the current environment is much more favorable thanks to the programs now in place. The main obstacle in 2005, according to him, was the lack of proper guidance after the tournament. “Many players, although very talented, did not find stable direction or support within their clubs. That absence of structure slowed their progress,” he recalled.
Reflecting on the achievements of Mohamed Ouahbi’s squad at the current World Cup in Chile, Jamal said their run has been “very honorable, and to me, it was no surprise.” He added that despite moments of doubt at the continental level, this generation managed to raise its game, overcome tough challenges, and deliver a strong collective performance on the world stage.
According to him, reaching the final of the 2025 World Cup is not only a great result but also proof that the method works: a blend of players from national academies and the diaspora, psychological preparation, tactical adaptability, and squad depth—all of which helped correct past mistakes.
