Washington Congratulates Morocco: A Historic UN Security Council Vote Confirms the Kingdom’s Sovereignty Over Its Sahara

In a message posted on the X platform, Massad Boulos, Senior U.S. Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, described this vote as a “historic moment,” marking, in his words, “a major political turning point” in the UN’s handling of the Sahara issue.

« The United States welcomes today’s historic vote to extend MINURSO’s mandate for one year and looks forward to supporting negotiations to achieve peace in Western Sahara. », he wrote.

The American diplomat recalled Washington’s long-standing position, guided by the vision of President Donald Trump, who recognized in December 2020 Morocco’s full sovereignty over its southern provinces. He reaffirmed that the autonomy solution under Moroccan sovereignty, proposed by the Kingdom in 2007, remains the only credible, serious, and lasting path toward a definitive settlement of the dispute.

Notably, Resolution 2797 introduces unprecedented terminology within the Security Council, explicitly recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara. Championed by the United States, the text represents a profound shift in the international diplomatic dynamic, establishing Morocco as a central actor in regional stability.

The resolution also calls on all parties – Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario – to engage without preconditions and in good faith in a constructive political process. Washington particularly emphasized the need for direct and sincere involvement from Algeria, now recognized as a stakeholder in the dispute rather than a mere observer.

Massad Boulos also praised the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, highlighting the importance of dialogue and rapprochement between Morocco and Algeria to build a Maghreb future founded on trust and shared interests.

The United States further reaffirmed its full support for the mission of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, to whom the Council has granted an expanded mandate to revive negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy plan.

This clear U.S. position aligns with the continuity of the 2020 American recognition and reflects a renewed commitment to achieving lasting stability in the Maghreb, centered on Morocco’s full and unquestioned sovereignty over its Sahara.

«Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. remains committed to working with all parties to achieve a just and lasting peace,» concluded Massad Boulos.

Thus, the American message reaffirms what the international community now widely acknowledges: Morocco’s autonomy plan is no longer one proposal among others — it has become the cornerstone of the global consensus. A historic turning point in international diplomacy, and a resounding victory for Morocco and its Sovereign, His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
