Royal Air Maroc: First Delivery from the 200-Aircraft Strategic Fleet Program Expected in 2028

The tender, launched in April 2024, covers the acquisition of up to 200 aircraft by 2037. Currently in its final evaluation stage, the process involves the world’s three major aerospace manufacturers: Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer. Reuters notes that this is one of the most ambitious modernization projects ever undertaken by Royal Air Maroc.

According to Addou, around one-quarter of the new fleet will consist of long-haul aircraft designed to boost intercontinental routes, while the remainder will be single-aisle medium-haul models serving regional and Euro-Mediterranean markets. The total cost of the deal has not yet been disclosed.

A Gradual and Structured Expansion

Beginning in 2028, Royal Air Maroc plans to receive an average of 15 new aircraft per year. Until then, the airline will continue to expand its fleet through leasing arrangements, adding up to 13 planes annually.

This fleet reinforcement will support the company’s strategic goal of turning Casablanca into a major air hub connecting Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East—solidifying Morocco’s position as a key crossroads for global air travel.

Infrastructure Growth in Sync

In parallel, Reuters reports that Morocco’s National Airports Authority (ONDA) has launched a tender to build a completely new terminal, increasing the country’s total passenger capacity to 35 million by 2029, up from 10.5 million today—a more than threefold rise in less than a decade.

A Unified National Vision

The alignment between RAM’s fleet expansion and the development of national airport infrastructure reflects a cohesive national vision aimed at:

  • Supporting the growth of international air traffic,
  • Deepening connectivity across Africa, and
  • Establishing Morocco as one of the world’s leading air transit hubs.

The ambition is clear: to make Moroccan skies a central meeting point for global mobility in the 21st century.
