Moroccan Jewish Community Proudly Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Green March in Casablanca

While the celebration was held in Casablanca, it also resonated abroad, with members of the Moroccan Jewish diaspora in Europe, Israel, South America, and North America marking the occasion simultaneously. This widespread participation reflects the community’s unwavering attachment to Morocco’s history and founding values.

Launched by His Majesty King Hassan II, the Green March remains a landmark in Morocco’s national consciousness. It symbolized the unity of a people rallied around the defense of their territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Moroccan Jewish community, which has long played a major cultural and patriotic role in shaping the country’s identity, has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to the nation through the generations.

During the Anfa ceremony, patriotic songs, historical testimonials, and documentary screenings retraced the grandeur of that popular movement, celebrating the values of solidarity, peace, and brotherhood that inspired it. Participants also emphasized the enduring loyalty of the community under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who stands as the protector of Morocco’s plural identity and guardian of its Judeo-Moroccan heritage.

Speakers highlighted the unique place of the Jewish community within Moroccan society, recalling its ongoing contributions to the nation’s economic, artistic, spiritual, and diplomatic life. The 50th anniversary of the Green March was thus an opportunity to reaffirm an essential truth: Moroccan identity is plural, ancient, and enriched by all its components, united under one flag and one national destiny.

Through this heartfelt commemoration, the Moroccan Jewish community once again expressed its deep affection and loyalty to Morocco, its millennia-old identity, its Sahara, and its King.
