Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hakim Hajoui, Elected Vice President of the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly

As First Vice President, Mr. Hajoui will accompany and contribute to the Assembly’s deliberations throughout the 2026-2027 term.

The Assembly is the highest governing body of the International Maritime Organization. It approves the work program and budget, defines financial arrangements, and elects the IMO Council. It brings together all member states and meets every two years.

The Moroccan delegation taking part in this major international event dedicated to the future of the maritime sector is led by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdelssamad Kayouh, and includes Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hakim Hajoui.

During this session, member state representatives will examine the broad guidelines that will shape the organization’s work in the coming years, amid technological change and the growing challenges facing this vital pillar of the global economy.

Participants will also review strategic priorities for the sector, adopt key decisions, and elect new members of the IMO Council, the executive body responsible for overseeing the organization’s work, for which Morocco is a candidate in category C.

The Assembly will also review a consolidated text of the IMO Convention, proposals to revise the rules of procedure, and measures concerning relations with partner non-governmental organizations.

Member states are also expected to vote on the gradual adoption of Arabic as a working language within the organization, an initiative aimed at strengthening linguistic diversity within this United Nations specialized agency.

The Assembly will additionally examine the updated strategic plan for the 2024-2029 period, which sets the IMO’s priorities in maritime safety, marine environment protection, technological innovation, and capacity building for member states.

Delegates will also discuss the budget and work program for 2026-2027, two essential documents defining the organization’s resources in a context marked by the energy transition and the digitalization of global supply chains.

The Moroccan delegation attending this major global event includes senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the State Secretariat in charge of Maritime Fisheries, the National Ports Agency, and the Tanger Med Port Authority.
