France’s Lucas Philippe Elected in Marrakech New Interpol President

Lucas Philippe, who succeeds the United Arab Emirates’ Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, whose term has come to an end, obtained 84 votes, or 51.2% of the votes cast, ahead of Turkey’s candidate Mustafa Serkan Sabanca with 60 votes (36.6%). The two other candidates, Anne-Marie Nainda of Namibia and Demelash Gebremicheal Wewdeyes of Ethiopia, received 12 votes (7.3%) and 8 votes (4.9%) respectively.

The President of Interpol and other members of the Executive Committee are elected by the General Assembly on the basis of the “one country, one vote” principle, whereby each vote carries equal weight.

As President, Lucas Philippe’s role during his term of office will be to chair the Executive Committee meetings, which oversees the implementation of decisions taken at the General Assembly.

The role of the President, a part-time, unpaid position, is to chair the General Assembly and the three sessions of the Executive Committee each year.

INTERPOL’s constitution requires the President to ensure that the Organization’s activities comply with decisions taken by the General Assembly and the Executive Committee, and to maintain, to the extent possible, a direct and constant relationship with the Organization’s Secretary General.
