“Collaboration with Morocco is something that need not be conceived anew, but rather something to be further reinforced,” Lucas Philippe, elected head of the organization, told the press on Thursday during Interpol’s 93rd General Assembly, highlighting the values of respect, hard work, and collective intelligence at the basis of ties with the Kingdom.
“You can count on me to give prominence to this cooperation!” he assured, expressing delight at “celebrating Interpol’s ideas and values in Morocco.”
In addition, the new president pledged to safeguard Interpol’s heritage and to work to maintain the momentum needed to achieve common goals through a “pragmatic and achievable” plan.
According to him, this involves transforming ideas into “concrete and tangible” actions, affirming that he will ensure that all continents’ voices are heard within the organization.
Lucas Philippe, who succeeds the United Arab Emirates’ Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi whose term has come to an end, received 84 votes, or 51.2% of the votes cast at the General Assembly in Marrakech (November 24-27).
The President of Interpol and other members of the Executive Committee are elected by the General Assembly on the basis of the “one country, one vote” principle, whereby each vote carries equal weight.
As President, Lucas Philippe’s role during his term of office will be to chair the Executive Committee meetings, which oversees the implementation of decisions taken at the General Assembly.
The role of the President, a part-time, unpaid position, is to chair the General Assembly and the three sessions of the Executive Committee each year.
INTERPOL’s constitution requires the President to ensure that the Organization’s activities comply with decisions taken by the General Assembly and the Executive Committee, and to maintain, to the extent possible, a direct and constant relationship with the Organization’s Secretary General.
